{"id":1354,"date":"2012-07-18T17:49:34","date_gmt":"2012-07-18T22:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.fanagrams.com\/blog\/?p=1354"},"modified":"2012-07-22T15:52:18","modified_gmt":"2012-07-22T20:52:18","slug":"naming-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fanagrams.com\/blog\/2012\/07\/naming-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"Naming Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I am currently trying to write a murder mystery, not because I have a great plot line in mind, or a deep roiling well of family dysfunction and tragedy to draw from, but mostly because I want the naming rights.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I figure I have very limited opportunities to name things \u2013 my children, pets, maybe I can rename myself, but these will never be enough to exhaust the great names\u00a0in my mental notebook.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And I don\u2019t think that I am alone here.\u00a0\u00a0In the Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald spends a couple of pages reeling off the names of Gatsby\u2019s houseguests.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This doesn\u2019t seem to advance the plot at all, except to showcase Fitzgerald\u2019s quirky rolodex.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">His couples are named the \u201cCatlips,\u201d or the \u201cFishguards,\u201d there is a man named \u201cKlipspringer,\u201d and a \u201cwhole clan named Blackbuck.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Occasionally Fitzgerald adds an extraneous but compelling detail.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There\u2019s Edgar Beaver, \u201cwhose hair, they say, turned white one summer for no reason at all,\u201d or Ripley Snell who got \u201cso drunk on the gravel drive that Mrs. Ulysses Swett\u2019s automobile ran over his right hand.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Somehow specifying the right hand instead of the left makes Ripley Snell even quirkier.<!--more--><!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So my first step in writing a mystery was to figure out what names I would use, and basically I hoped that the plot line would somehow just take care of itself.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Like Fitzgerald, I wanted to set the mystery in some sort of cloistered elitist environment filled with people with ridiculous names.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I wanted to have people with first names that sounded more like last names, perhaps Farwell Windblow,\u00a0Foster Cradlerocks\u00a0or Cooley Bowbreaks.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In fact, I envisioned a family saddled with colliding naming traditions.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">On the mother\u2019s side the tradition was that the first born son was named after the mother\u2019s maiden name, while on the father\u2019s side, the first born daughter was named after the father.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Unfortunately for the son, the mother\u2019s maiden name was Cate, and his twin sister was called Billie.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This transgender naming was never questioned in their tight world, particularly since the family summered in <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maine<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> at their family compound called Cate\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Head <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Bay<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Their neighbor was named Carr Fellowes, but everyone just called him Auto.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally one year he just went ahead and legally changed his name to Otto.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And so on and so on.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The fabulous thing about writing a mystery novel is that you can experiment with names, switch them around, and name the murder victim or the sleazy perp after friends \u2013 the possibilities are endless.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In my mystery, I named one of the characters Goddard, because I wanted somebody to have the nickname of \u201cGod.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then his sister could be a Goddess.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My detective is Liza Blue, based on my brother\u2019s long ago suggestion that we collectively change the (Brown) color of our last name. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Blue seemed the best alternative to other standard colors \u2013 what would be the point of changing Brown to something equally blah like Green, White or Black.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 Liza Blue had a nice rhythm about it and reminded me of Eyes of\u00a0Blue.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also, with Blue, you could play around with the spelling, i.e. Blew, Bloo, Baloo, Bleu.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the real world, your naming rights are severely limited by the number of your children \u2013 basically a couple of first names and associated nick names and a couple of middle names.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And how do you want to spend this precious resource \u2013 do you want to honor ancestors, either living or dead?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If so, which ones, and are you slighting the other side of the family?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When I was a child, the tradition was that the first born son was a junior, so my older brother got stuck with the name Ralphie.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There was no similar tradition for girls, though plenty were named after their mothers. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My mother\u2019s name was Fanny, and fortunately for me, she announced early on that she was not going to repeat her parent\u2019s mistake.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It would certainly be quite an honor to have someone named after you, and I think of my Grandmother Brown, who was a matriarch in every sense of the word, not only to her five children and 22 grandchildren, but also to several generations of nieces and nephews. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Her Christmas list must have numbered in the hundreds; her house was the family gathering spot and a treasured shared memory among all my cousins.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I imagine that she sat by the phone with baited breath after each birth, thinking that maybe this time, at last, she would have a namesake.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The problem was that her name was Geraldine, and I think that everyone thought it was an ugly name.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When my parents were married, my mother made a preemptive strike \u2013 they got a police dog and named her Geraldine.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That was one ballsy move by my newlywed mother \u2013 she must have wanted to send her mother-in-law a very clear message that she was in charge of the relationship.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Perhaps to make up for this early slight, my parents gave my grandmother the naming rights to their fourth son.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Geraldine wasn\u2019t a possibility, and they were relieved that my Grandfather\u2019s even more unfortunate name, Fay, had already been used by my Uncle Fay, who had\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">stuck with tradition and named his son Fayette III (poor guy).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My grandmother proposed the name Nathaniel Walker Brown, honoring some long lost relative.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My parents dutifully wrote this into the birth certificate, but then promptly ignored it and merrily called my brother Tony.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If Tony enters politics, he will have to put his name in quotes, Nathaniel \u201cTony\u201d Brown, like Thomas \u201cTip\u201d O\u2019Neill, or Lewis \u201cScooter\u201d Libby. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It is a tricky business to name your children.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I think that it is a parental responsibility to find that fine line between a name that makes your child feel unique and special and not an oddball \u2013 a name that is not constantly misspelled or mispronounced or prompts a reaction of ?Huh?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If the name has a little family heritage, all the better. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our son Ned\u2019s given name is Edward, which is a family name, but we chose Ned because it was somewhat uncommon, but it\u2019s still a name you can do business with.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Also we have never met a Ned we didn\u2019t like. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0Frances<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> is as close as we could come to my mother\u2019s of name of Fanny. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Basically, if you want to get creative with a name, get a dog and go wild. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I once proposed that we name a dog Elemeno P, basically the letters of the alphabet L, M, N, O, but that was voted down as overly cute.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How about naming a dog kitty; you would call \u201cHere, Kitty, Kitty, Kitty,\u201d and surprise onlookers when a large dog bounds up. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My cousin says her elderly aunt named her dog Lover so that she could startle the neighborhood when she called to him at night.\u00a0 But beware of getting too cute.\u00a0 While friends and family will politely hold their tongue when your reveal your newborn&#8217;s name, they will freely express their shock and dismay at your pet&#8217;s name.\u00a0 Our first dog was a shnauzer poodle mix which we named Gizmo.\u00a0 My mother immediately weighed in, &#8220;Don&#8217;t you realize that Gizmo is one of those cute names mothers use to protect tender ears against the horror of the word !Penis! said outloud -Such\u00a0as Ralphie,\u00a0you know that you are never supposed to touch your Gizmo\u00a0in public.\u00a0 Put it away right now.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So go ahead and humiliate a pet with some crackpot name, but don\u2019t overlook the one special person\u00a0you can reliably make fun of, i.e. yourself. \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Your final naming opportunity will come when you announce what your grandchildren should call you \u2013 settling for Grandma or Grampa seems like a lost opportunity.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When my parents first became grandparents, I begged them to call themselves Gumby and Pokey, but they declined.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My mother did get into the spirit of the thing and anointed herself \u201cBum,\u201d a play on her given name of Fanny, and soon anyone under the age of 10 was calling her Bum.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I don\u2019t foresee needing a grandmother name anytime in the distant future, but I figure there\u2019s no harm in tucking a few away.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I would make a good Pokey, but Nick is not a fan of Gumby.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe we could consider other famous couples, such as Bert and Ernie (I would be willing to be Bert) or Lady and the Tramp (well maybe not).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have also considered\u00a0 pairs of words that always go together,\u00a0drawing on the symbolism of an enduring partnership. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But I have had trouble coming up with an acceptable combo. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0For example <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cBoard and Grapple,\u201d just won\u2019t work.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have always liked the duo of \u201cFlotsam and Jetsam,\u201d particularly the sound of the word flotsam, but these words would be too difficult for a toddler to pronounce. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cEbb and Flow\u201d might work and Nick likes \u201cWarm and Fuzzy.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For a solo name, I have taken a recent fancy to name of \u201cDobbin,\u201d best known as a farmyard horse.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This name should be easy to pronounce, and it has many positive attributes \u2013 hardworking, durable, forever loyal, trustworthy and low maintenance.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just give Dobbin a fresh bag of oats every now and then, and with a lump of sugar and a pat on the back, she should be good to go. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New
