(See prior posts filed\u00a0under &#8220;SAT Experience.&#8221;)\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A previous essay described my quest to finally understand why you can\u2019t divide by zero (Grokking It), but now I realize that I have one piece of unfinished business left from my junior high school education.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">How is it that multiplying two negative numbers results in a positive number?<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">It makes no intuitive sense to me, because as I was taught early and often \u2013 two wrongs do not make a right.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">My journey through the history of zero taught me that math is best understood if you can restrain yourself from trying to explain all math through real world problems.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Basically, numbers are simply tools, and have no meaning aside from what we assign to them.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The number \u201c1\u201d on its own doesn\u2019t mean much, it is only when we say \u201cone banana\u201d that it acquires some sort of context.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aside from mathematicians, engineers and physicists, every day math for the everyday person is all about counting objects in our every day world, so that math as <em>a concept<\/em> is unfamiliar.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So perhaps my multiplication problem should be reframed as a problem that does not have a simple real word explanation, and, just like dividing by zero, I should just accept it and move on.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <!--more--><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And this is what I did, and it has served my very well.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, in the back of my mind, I have wondered how such a basic concept of life could be based on a rule without a rationale explanation.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Certainly, the vast majority of my day passes in a \u201cneed to know\u201d basis, starting from the light switch in the morning, to the telephone, and of course the internet.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have never understood electricity and can only visualize a swarm of little <\/span><\/span><em><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">e<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;\">&#8211;<\/span><\/sup><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2019s coursing through wires.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And the internet is even more mysterious, grabbing information from an all-knowing invisible force and displaying it just for me on my screen.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">choose not to understand these everyday conveniences and leave them to the engineers and physicists, but somehow multiplying two negative numbers seems to be so basic that it should be within my grasp.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Another theme that ran through my education was that if I didn\u2019t understand something then it was probably my fault \u2013 perhaps I was sick on the day of the big explanation and AHA moment, or perhaps I was doodling, but my assumption was that everyone else understood the two negative numbers conundrum, and that I was the only one slavishly following a rule that I did not understand.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And then of course there is only a window of time when you can raise your hand and say, \u201cI\u2019m sorry, I just don\u2019t understand \u2013 it just doesn\u2019t make any sense to me why -2 X -2 is 4.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Maybe you could ask this question in 8<\/span><\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\"> grade, maybe 10<\/span><sup><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman; font-size: x-small;\">th<\/span><\/sup><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> grade, but I can\u2019t imagine raising my hand and asking it in college.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">At that point, by default I just had to live with the rule.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of my bosses once gave me the advice, \u201cit is better to be stupid than look stupid.\u201d In other words keep your stupidity to yourself.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This tip was given in regard to public presentations at the American Medical Association, where I was frequently put in the position of having to answer questions that I knew nothing about.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Just better to deflect the question rather than flailing around and making an idiot out of yourself.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So the real issue boils down to whether you are smart enough to know when you are stupid and should keep your mouth shut.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have fallen into that trap several times when my ignorance is so complete that I don\u2019t even realize that I\u2019m ignorant.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I play handbells at the local Presbyterian church, not because I am a Presbyterian, but because that is where the handbells are.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I have always known that a yawning hole in my education is any knowledge of any religion.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sure I know about Christmas and Easter &#8211; although I don\u2019t know why Easter is not on the same day every year, and what Lent is supposed to represent.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Our choir performs before Christmas every year, and we always seem to perform \u201cWe Three Kings of Orient Are,\u201d which is in some\u00a0dreary and dissonant key.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I asked, \u201cWhy can\u2019t we play something peppier?\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The choir looked at me with disbelieving eyes and said, \u201cBecause it is Advent.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Hmm \u2013 I wisely decided not to pursue this further, but then made the same mistake before Easter, when we similarly always play something downbeat.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This time I got the same look, with the answer, \u201cBecause this is the Lenten season.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now I wisely shut up and just play what is put in front of me.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One time I went out to lunch with a Jewish colleague and offered to split a sandwich with him.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He looked at me and said, \u201cFirst of all, don\u2019t you know that it is Passover, and second of all that during Passover I only eat unleavened bread.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I wanted to point out that I was totally unbiased and that my ignorance extended across all religions, but I was smart enough to know that professing complete ignorance should only be invoked if you are facing jail time.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So where do you go when the window is closed on stupid questions?\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You need a\u00a0trusted nonjudgmental friend who answers even the most na\u00efve questions with good karma.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This was especially important in my medical career when I was in the position of interviewing physicians who were expert in their field.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I needed a whole hierarchy of people I could call on to move me along the learning curve, so that I could hold my own when I finally interviewed the imperious Dr. Big.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Often I found that the\u00a0initial boost onto the learning curve was all I needed \u2013 I could make my way from there, but it could be challenging to find that first infinitely patient person.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But now I have a new BFF, it is called the internet, who seems to know everything and considers nothing too stupid.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">I type in \u201cmultiplying two negative numbers\u201d and I discover that I am not alone, there are millions of people just like me who secretly feel either curious or inadequate and have turned to the internet for nonjudgmental comfort.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some entries explained the problem by using a different spin on the \u201ctwo wrongs don\u2019t make a right\u201d adage, by stating that two negatives result in a positive statement, such as \u201cI didn\u2019t say that I don\u2019t like you.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">However, I reject that explanation, since, to me, this statement is more dissembling than a positive statement.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">There were other attempts at real world explanation.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The most creative was the baby walking backwards on the number line.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Here is how you visualize it.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The baby faces toward the west if there is a negative number.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For example, if the problem is 2 X -3, he faces west (the negative number) and takes two paces three times and he ends up at the -6 position.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now, for -2 X -3, he again faces west, but this times he walks backwards 2 steps three times and ends up at the positive 6 spot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fanagrams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/unfinished-business-number-line.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-900\" https:\/\/www.fanagrams.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/unfinished-business-number-line-300x78.gif 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 588px) 100vw, 588px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Well maybe that makes some sense but I still think that it arbitrarily assigns which way the baby is facing and walking.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A more real life explanation involves loans.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Let\u2019s say your employer automatically deducts your $1,000 mortgage payments from your monthly paycheck, i.e.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">$12,000 is removed from your paycheck every year (i.e. -1,000 x 12 = -12,000).<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now let\u2019s say that your company decides to give you a bonus by removing the deduction every month for a year \u2013 i.e. they deduct the deduction (get it, two negatives) and if you do that every month you end up with $12,000 additional dollars at the end of the year.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Again this seems contrived to me.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ultimately, similar to zero, the best approach is just to stop using numbers and rely on symbols \u2013 that way you don\u2019t have to remember which way the baby is walking or who owes who.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">So here is a purely mathematical approach to the issue:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u00a0&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Start out with the equation <\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">x = ab + (-a)(b) + (-a)(-b)<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And watch what happens when you solve it two different ways, first factoring out <strong>a<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and then <strong>b<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Factoring out <strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> we get:<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">x = ab + -a (b-b)<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">and since b-b = 0 our final answer is;<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">x = ab<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Now let\u2019s solve the same equation in a different way by factoring out <strong>b<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">x =\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">b (a-a) + (-a)(-b)\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">And since a-a = 0, our final answer is:<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">x = (-a)(-b)<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<address><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Times New Roman;\">Therefore, solving the same question two different ways we see that x = ab = (-a)(-b)<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span #000000;\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Tah Dah! \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Finally, I have answered the question that I have been afraid to ask for 45 or so years.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">But watch out, I see that next chapter in my math book introduces the concept of <\/span><strong><em><span style=\"color: #000000;\">i<\/span><\/em><\/strong><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, defined as the square root of -1 ( i.e. \u221a-1), which of course I have just convinced myself can\u2019t possibly exist.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">An engineer named Rafael Bombelli came up with this in 1572, and this seems to be a nice place for me to stop refreshing my math skills.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From this point forward, math wise, I am happy to be on a \u201cneed to know\u201d basis.<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h6><em><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The missing words in the following poem are two sets of anagrams (i.e. share the same letters like spot, stop and post) and the number of dashes and asterisks indicate the number of letters.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the missing words in each #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Specifically, why did multiplying two negatives result in a plus?<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">But it &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; him to tell me only that it was a rule I could trust.<\/span><\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">With blind obedience I learned the rule and have &#8211; &#8211; &#8211; &#8211;\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"color:
